German firm Siegwerk has reached an agreement to acquire flexographic inks supplier Ultra Inks to expand its footprint in Canada.

Founded in the 1800s, Siegwerk is an international supplier of printing inks for packaging applications and labels.

Ultra Inks primarily manufactures water-based flexo inks for narrow web and paper and board applications.

The transaction will expand Siegwerk’s product portfolio for packaging and label printers, as well as support its services in the Canadian market.

Siegwerk’s head of the Constitution of the United States of America (CUSA) region Dave Hiserodt said: “Ultra Inks is a well-established expert for packaging and label inks with a very strong local reputation, especially in Québec.

“The company is known for its highly personalised inks and services and therefore is a perfect fit for our Siegwerk family.”

The company intends to benefit from Ultra Inks’ experience in the Canadian market and product offering, while Ultra Inks will leverage Siegwerk’s global reach, access to international raw material suppliers, key accounts, and complementary narrow web ultraviolet (UV) technology and ink portfolio.

Following the transaction, Ultra Ink customers are expected to benefit from a more comprehensive product portfolio and a wider technological expertise.

Both companies will target their solutions specifically to the customer’s individual needs to ensure a smooth transition and a simplified integration process going forward.

“The new owner of our company will integrate our quality ink into a significantly larger structure and thus further advance it on the market.”

Ultra Inks CEO Frédéric Perrier said: “We believe in partnerships that put the emphasis on clients’ needs, commitment to quality and product development and this is exactly what we have found in Siegwerk.

“We are very glad to name Siegwerk the new owner of our company who will integrate our quality ink into a significantly larger structure and thus further advance it on the market. As far as service and support are concerned, Ultra Inks will maintain its high standards.”

Ultra Inks will become part of Siegwerk Canada once the transaction is closed.

Siegwerk has been engaged in acquisitions to support its position as a full-range provider for the packaging market. Last year, the company purchased UK-based water-based inks and coatings specialist Hi-Tech Products and Dutch water-based flexo and gravure printing inks manufacturer Van Son Liquids.
