Packaging solutions provider SIG has revealed plans to expand its advanced aseptic carton production facility in Querétaro, Mexico, with a $35m investment starting in 2025.

The announcement follows the plant’s successful operational launch in early 2023 and reinforces SIG’s commitment to serving the markets in the US, Canada, Mexico, and Central America.

Set to commence production in the second half of 2026, the expansion will increase the facility’s packaging output by 50%.

The expansion will also allow the company to introduce a wider range of carton formats, including SIG MiniBloc, SIG XSlimBloc, SIG PremiumBloc, SIG MaxiBloc, SIG MagnumBloc, and the SIG Midi family, spanning volumes from 80ml to 2l.

SIG’s filling technology enables swift transitions between formats, volumes, and designs, offering customers flexibility in a fast-paced market.

The upgrade will also address the growing demand for small-volume packaging, with the SIG MiniBloc and SIG XSlimBloc formats supporting aseptic filling for 80ml to 250ml products, ideal for single-serve and on-the-go consumption.

Located strategically for efficient regional distribution, the Querétaro plant is among SIG’s most advanced global facilities, adhering to high environmental, safety, and technological standards. It serves as a key hub in the company’s North American supply network.

The site also hosts a Reliability & Performance Center which employs cutting-edge technology to provide remote asset management and technical support to customers.

SIG president and Americas general manager Ricardo Rodriguez said: “North America is a strategic growth region for SIG, and this expansion reflects our strong belief in its potential.

“With our Querétaro facility, we have established a world-class production hub. Now, we are scaling up to meet growing demand while continuing to deliver sustainable, innovative, and flexible packaging solutions to our customers.”

This expansion strengthens SIG’s position to deliver innovative, tailored packaging solutions across North America, supporting sustained growth through enhanced production capacity and market proximity.

SIG Querétaro plant operations head Eugen Schreiber said: “Our team in Querétaro is proud to lead the way in operational excellence.

“This expansion will not only increase our output and packaging capabilities, but also create more than 50 new jobs, further contributing to the local economy and strengthening our presence in the region.

“Since the start of operations, the plant has already generated over 250 jobs, fostering local talent and development.”

In May this year, SIG launched the ‘Terra Alu-free + Full barrier’ solution for multi-serve aseptic cartons.
