Solid board sheets and board packaging producer Solidus Solutions has purchased a majority stake in UK-based packaging boxes manufacturer Northern Paper Board.

The company purchased the shares from John and Paul Curran, Northern Paper Board’s current owners.

Northern Paper Board is a supplier of solid board and corrugated octabin solutions and services to the food processing industry. The company also has a merchant packaging operation that supplies standard and guillotine cardboard, polythene and other packaging services.

“We are pleased to announce Solidus’ acquisition of a controlling interest in Northern Paper Board.”

Founded in 1979, Northern Paper Board operates from its purpose-built facility in North Yorkshire. The company is led by John and Paul Curran and an existing management team.

Solidus Solutions CEO Richard Houben said: “We are pleased to announce Solidus’ acquisition of a controlling interest in Northern Paper Board, which has a reputation for quality, excellence and dedication to meeting customer needs.

“It’s an impressive business with high-quality manufacturing capabilities. We look forward to working with John and Paul Curran going forward.”

Solidus Solutions was formed after German private equity firm Aurelius acquired the Solid Board operations of Smurfit Kappa in the Netherlands, Belgium and the UK in April 2015.

In February this year, Aurelius acquired Spanish core board and solid board packaging products producer Abelan Board Industrial.

At that time, the company disclosed that the operations of Abelan will be combined with those of Solidus Solutions in a move intended to diversify its operations geographically and enhance growth.

Solidus Solutions operates five solid board mills and six packaging plants in the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain and the UK, with a combined production capacity of 350,000t.
