Global packaging company Sonoco has acquired 100% of the shares of Inapel Embalagens, a manufacturer of mono and multilayer materials for flexible packaging in Brazil.

The companies have not disclosed the financial details and other terms of this transaction.

With the deal’s completion, Inapel will now operate as part of Sonoco’s existing flexible packaging operation in Pinhais, Brazil.

According to Inapel, the latest acquisition has been completed by Graffo Paranaense de Embalagens, a subsidiary of Sonoco Products Company in Brazil.

Graffo, which itself was acquired by Sonoco in 2015, will combine its skills with Inapel’s offerings and expertise to address the demands of new and existing consumers and their growth plans.

Sonoco said that its Graffo site has already been supporting the production of rotogravure printing and lamination for eight years and is also a converter of foil-based flexible packaging.

The deal will further require Sonoco Flexibles’ managing director Eduardo Nunes to extend his regional leadership duties to the São Paulo locations, working in close coordination with Inapel’s previous owners Rodrigo Alvarez and Monica Saniotto.

“Our entire leadership team is happy to have Inapel join the Sonoco family. This partnership complements all aspects of our long-term strategy,” Nunes added.

The latest acquisition is also in line with Sonoco’s efforts to expand its flexible packaging service operations.

Sonoco Global Flexibles president Russell Grissett said: “The technical capacity, expertise, shared values and customer-first focus of Inapel aligns well with our business as we look to grow and expand our sustainable packaging portfolio.

“Previous Inapel owners Rodrigo Alvarez and Monica Saniotto will continue working with us as strategic members of our leadership in our efforts to develop innovative, ‘Better Packaging’ solutions in the region and across the globe.”

Established in 1971, Inapel is a packaging manufacturer with various production capabilities such as cold seal, speciality coatings, pouching, and cylinder engraving, as well as adhesive and extrusion laminations.

The company has two facilities in Brazil’s São Paulo region, including one in Jundiai and the other in Guarulhos. It currently has around 500 employees.
