Making the Packaging System Fit the Circular Economy

For the packaging industry to achieve a sustainable future, it needs to dramatically increase circularity and the reuse of materials. While shifting from a linear economy to a circular model will take time, there are already actions that brands, manufacturers, and converters can already take to help make a difference. This document by Siegwerk – a global leader in inks and coatings for packaging – delves into solving the plastic paradox, looks at the relevance of bioplastics, and sets out ways to not only achieve circularity in packaging but also make it economically viable. Furthermore, the document goes into detail on how printing inks and coatings are vital for enabling circularity in packaging. Ultimately, the packaging system needs to be reconfigured for a circular future. And consumers are expecting the packaging industry to play its part in progress. To take the first step towards circularity, download this document.

Natrellis is the first 100% US sourced fibre bowl for refrigerated, frozen and prepared foods.

The dual-ovenable bowl is free from per- or poly-fluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS). It can be used in place of traditional rigid plastic packages.

Sonoco division North America rigid paper and closures vice-president and general manager Ernest Haynes said: “This new sugarcane-based package is further evidence of our commitment to developing more sustainable options for brands and consumers alike.

“High quality refrigerated, and chilled foods continue to grow as a category. Using this novel technology allows us to produce a natural package made from an annually renewable resource, something that more and more shoppers and brands are looking for today. That’s a win, win for everyone.”

Primal Kitchen will use the new bowl as the primary package for its new line of frozen bowls and skillet meals.

Currently available at select retailers, the line will be made available at HyVee, Publix, Natural Grocers, Whole Foods Market and more from this spring and summer.

The new Primal Kitchen frozen line features meals made with grass-fed beef or cage-free chicken and a variety of vegetables.

Primal Kitchen founder Mark Sisson said: “Developing and offering frozen meals is a natural extension of our brand promise and great solution for busy families and health-minded individuals alike. We’re proud to use the Natrellis bowl because it aligns perfectly with our mission and values.”
