South African pulp and paper company Sappi has launched a new high-barrier, paper-based packaging solution, Algro Guard OHG.

The solution is equipped with integrated grease and mineral oil barriers and heat-sealing properties, and is suitable for flexible packaging applications.

Algro Guard OHG’s integrated barriers help prevent oxygen and water vapour moving into packaged products.

According to Sappi, the solution simplifies packaging production and eliminates the use of special coatings or lamination.

Algro Guard OHG contains more than 80% renewable materials, and can contain luxury products without needing additional sealants.

Belgian chocolate producer Delafaille was the first user of Algro Guards OHG.

Delafaille general manager Paul Daems said: "We were developing a package for our new brand, Amusette.

"The Algro Guard OHG’s integrated barriers help prevent oxygen and water vapour moving into packaged products."

"We wanted something that would improve the product safety, the user friendliness and the optical appearance. We needed a paper that could enhance our unique design idea, which is similar to a teabag envelope.

"The package makes the unwrapping and consuming of chocolate a special moment, adding to its overall value and increasing consumer engagement with the brand."

With Algro Guard OHG’s heat resistant properties, Amusette could be produced as a flow pack.

The Algro Guard product family includes Algro Guard M, a packaging paper with a mineral oil barrier.
