US-based grocery distributor Spartan Stores has announced that its Spartan brand packaging will now include nutritional icons on the front to highlight the amount of calories, saturated fat, sodium and sugar per serving.

The labels are intended to help consumers make more-informed decisions, and will complement Spartan Stores’ other health and wellness initiatives.

The labels support the voluntary Facts Up Front nutrition labelling system designed by the Food Marketing Institute and the Grocery Manufacturing Association.

The $50m Facts Up Front consumer education campaign will launch in early 2012, when consumers will see the new icons on a majority of products in the marketplace.

The launch of the labelling system at Spartan includes products such as frozen chicken, baked beans, fresh selections salads and canned fruit.
