The material is intended to match the functional performance of extruded polystyrene (XPS) while offering an option with lower carbon impact and circularity features.

According to the company, Luminy FOAM 50F is an industrially compostable, bio-based material that is designed to support a shift in materials without requiring changes to established production set-ups.

TotalEnergies Corbion said the grade can serve as a replacement for polystyrene in existing XPS extrusion lines, with similar throughput and limited equipment changes.

The material provides density and functional properties comparable to XPS and can be processed on standard machinery.

The company said that the product is biobased, industrially compostable, recyclable, and does not contain styrene, perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), or persistent microplastics.

It added the grade’s high melt strength supports stable foam production without additional additives, chain extenders, or reactive processing.

This helps producers make low-density foam structures with uniform cell morphology for applications such as fresh protein packaging.

Luminy FOAM 50F is open for commercial orders worldwide.

The company has FDA and Korean Food Contact approval and can be used in markets that follow FDA or Korean rules. In other markets, it can be used for non-food applications.

The company is offering technical implementation support.

TotalEnergies Corbion global packaging segment leader Laurent Daligault said: “With polystyrene bans accelerating, this is one of the first solutions positioned as a true industrial-scale replacement, not a niche material.

“Luminy FOAM 50F enables converters and brand owners to adopt a truly sustainable drop-in solution to XPS, both in terms of processing and product functionality. It is also good for our planet, with our sugarcane-based PLA delivering at least a 70% reduction in carbon footprint compared to XPS foam parts.

“We look forward to supporting our customers globally, both commercially and technically, as they advance their sustainability ambitions.”
