Unilever is testing a wrapperless packaging method for its Solero’s Organic Peach range in the UK.

The packaging features a box with built-in compartments. It is manufactured using a specially designed polyethylene (PE) coated cardboard and can be recycled in the UK. This design is expected to replace individual plastic wrapping in multi-pack ice creams, reducing plastic use by 35%.

Carried out in partnership with online supermarket chain Ocado, the test will focus on collecting feedback from consumers.

Unilever refreshment vice-president Noel Clarke said: “As we head towards summer, we’ve listened to our customers and are working hard to rethink plastic packaging for our ice cream ranges.

“We’re delighted to be trialling this wrapper-less Solero multipack with Ocado in the UK. If successful and the feedback from customers is positive, this innovative pack could reduce the amount of plastic we use in the future to package our ice creams.”

The trial is the part of the company’s #GetPlasticWise initiative, which was launched earlier this year. As part of the initiative, the consumer goods company has been working in collaboration with its partners to explore new solutions and educate consumers on reducing plastic consumption.

In October last year, Unilever signed a three-year collaboration agreement with French resource management firm Veolia to jointly improve waste collection and recycling infrastructure across jurisdictions to lead to sustainable packaging.

The partnership will focus on creating a circular economy for plastics waste in various countries, starting with India and Indonesia.

Unilever Australia & New Zealand announced plans in July last year to use at least 25% recycled plastic for the packaging of some of its brands.

The company intends to use Australian sourced post-consumer recycled (pcr) plastic for bottles of it’s home and personal care brands such as OMO, Dove, Surf, Sunsilk and TRESemmé.
