UPM Raflatac has secured RecyClass recognition for its multipurpose UV acrylic adhesive technology used in polyethylene (PE) films.

The company claimed that this achievement makes it the first pressure-sensitive laminate producer to receive approval in this category.

The recognition expands UPM Raflatac’s portfolio of recyclable PE label materials, all of which are compatible with recycling alongside coloured and natural PE flexible films.

This aligns with the growing demand for sustainable packaging solutions from both consumers and brand owners.

The technology is an unprinted pressure-sensitive label made of clear or white PE facestock representing 21% of the film surface and a multipurpose acrylic UV pressure-sensitive adhesive.

The adhesive represents 5.3 % of the total weight of the packaging while the PE facestock of the label represents 36% of the total weight of the packaging.

“We are working towards a more sustainable and circular future. One big part of this is making plastic packaging recyclable. Labels not only serve as a carrier of information on flexible packages and packaging films, but also offer a functional purpose for example as closure systems,” said Katja Kivelä, business director, Food and HPC, Films & Specials SBU EMEIA, UPM Raflatac.

“We are proud to be the first-ever self-adhesive label company to provide RecyClass-approved recycling-compatible labelling solutions for PE flexible packaging.”

RecyClass is a collaborative effort driven by various stakeholders in the packaging industry, including brands, retailers, converters, raw material producers, and recyclers.

Its mission is to improve the recyclability of plastic packaging through scientific analysis and the development of assessment methodologies.

UPM Raflatac’s innovative labelling solutions cater specifically to the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) market.

With this RecyClass recognition, it is well-positioned to meet the ever-increasing demand for sustainable packaging options in this sector.
