Paper distributor Union Paper Mills has ordered automation systems from Valmet for its paper machines 2 (PM 2) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Valmet will supply its DNA Distributed Control System (DCS), IQ Quality Control System (QCS), and web-based Valmet DNA User Interface solutions as part of this order.

Valmet will be responsible for the design, engineering, production, factory acceptance testing, and fixing of Valmet’s DNA DCS for PM 2.

The QCS includes scanners and associated measurements and control applications, which will enhance machine performance and end-product quality.

Meanwhile, the Valmet DNA User interface, a single-system automation solution, leverages available information to process automation for users as per its roles.

Valmet’s automation systems were selected following the successful automation of Union’s PM 3 at its Al Dhafra facility in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Union automation manager Chander Prakash Sharma said: “We have seen good performance of Valmet DNA Distributed Control System and Valmet IQ Quality Control System at Al Dhafra mill and several other references in the region. And Valmet’s local service team from Valmet’s United Arab Emirates office provides good and competent service.”

Valmet has included the orders in the third quarter of 2023, with delivery and start-up of the new systems scheduled to take place in 2024.

The companies did not disclose the value of the order.

Valmet Pulp & Paper and Automation Systems business line area sales director Christian Kallich said: “We are proud to get the trust and this repeat order from our customer. This confirms that we have made good work as the leading automation supplier in the area with a strong service team.”

In August this year, Mercer International selected Valmet to deliver a mill-wide optimisation solution for its Rosenthal kraft pulp plant in Germany.
