German sustainable packaging solutions Wipak has launched an energy-efficient skin film that can be processed at temperatures lower than those of standard films.
The new film was designed in response to growing demand experienced by food manufacturers to offer sustainable packaging solutions.
Known as WINfresh Skin Films, the new films are suitable for vacuum packing chilled products, such as meat, seafood and cheese.
Manufacturers can reduce energy costs as the skin film can be processed at temperatures as low as 50°C below those of standard films.
Wipak Group sales and marketing director Patrick Verhelst said: “With consumers becoming more environmentally aware, food manufacturers must not only consider product presentation, but the sustainability credentials of their packaging too.”
The company noted that the new films help in enhancing its portfolio of solutions for chilled products.

By GlobalDataFood manufacturers can leverage the transparent and glossy feature of the film to offer attractive food presentation.
Verhelst added: “They also boast a whole host of sustainable benefits, such as reduced energy costs in production and reduced packaging volume and transportation emissions.
“Furthermore, as WINfresh Skin Films can be processed at lower temperatures, the products are treated more gently and a shelf life up to double that of modified atmosphere packaging can be achieved.”
Available in thicknesses ranging between 75 and 150μm, WINfresh Skin Films can be combined with Wipak’s thermoforming Skinbottom films, which are available in gold, silver, black, white, brown or transparent variations, also with a paper or non-woven surface.
According to Wipak, the skin films are soft, smooth and puncture resistant.
