Swedish packaging company Yangi has introduced an undercut capability for its Cellera industrial dry-forming platform, enabling the production of functional geometries in dry-moulded fibre packaging.
The addition brings “secure” closure functionality to dry-moulded fibre, broadening the potential to replace conventional plastic packaging across foodservice, dry-food, and ambient applications.

Yangi is demonstrating the capability through a new signature coffee lid.
The “precision-engineered” undercut provides a secure lid-to-container fit with a measured lid removal force of 6N.
During performance tests involving ten simulated pours over a ten-minute period, the lid maintained a leak-tight seal and structural integrity when exposed to hot liquids at 93°C.
The coffee lid format operates on a four-second cycle, targeting an estimated output of 300 lids per minute.
Beyond hot beverage closures, the undercut design allows for fitted lids across multiple formats.
Potential applications include ambient food vessels, cosmetics, confectionery containers, dessert and ice cream tubs, personal care packaging and takeaway containers.
The tooling operates on Yangi’s Cellera manufacturing platform, which utilises the patented FiberIQ fibre-formation system.
Engineered for “high-volume, cost-competitive” production, the system combines controlled fibre distribution with advanced forming technology.
Unlike conventional wet moulding, Cellera processes fibre without a water-based forming stage, lowering process water and energy requirements in the manufacture of renewable packaging.
Yangi commercial partnerships head Carlo Semeraro said: “Achieving this level of precision in dry-molded fibre requires advanced tooling and forming expertise.
“The coffee lid demonstrates the performance we can deliver today, but the real opportunity is applying this functionality to a much wider range of packaging applications.”
Earlier this year, Yangi launched a new dry-formed fibre tray designed for packaging meat, fish, deli items, and ready meals.
The tray is made using the company’s Cellera manufacturing platform, which allows packaging suppliers to adopt dry forming processes on a large scale.
