Construction firm YIT has received a contract from NREP Logicenters for the expansion and renovation of food-packaging specialist Huhtamaki’s production, storage and business premises in Hämeenlinna, Finland.

The Hämeenlinna factory produces paperboard foodservice packaging.

NREP Logicenters was awarded a contract earlier this month to develop a modern manufacturing facility adjacent to Huhtamäki’s logistics centre in the Käikälä industrial park in Hämeenlinna.

Under the terms of the turnkey contract, YIT will construct a new building of around 15,000m² and renovate 2,700m² of existing premises.

The company will commence planning and construction work immediately, with the project anticipated to be completed in December 2019.

Upon completion, the new production plant is set to replace the existing property that was built in the 1960s.

“Responsibility is important to us in all our operations, and we are proud to introduce new innovative solutions for energy-efficient construction.”

Huhtamaki general manager Maisa Katila said: “The premises will be designed according to the lean principle to make the flow of goods smoother and to minimise unnecessary traffic.”

The scope of work also includes installation of new machines at the factory and increasing automation.

In addition, YIT will focus on improving occupational safety and ergonomics as part of the renovation work.

The plant will be built in an energy efficient way to allow usage of waste heat generated by production for heating the building, using LED technology for the building’s lighting needs.

NREP Logicenters partner Jani Nokkanen said: “Properties take up a huge proportion of the total energy consumption in Finland. Responsibility is important to us in all our operations, and we are proud to introduce new innovative solutions for energy-efficient construction.”

Huhtamaki operates through four business units, Foodservice Europe-Asia-Oceania, North America, Flexible Packaging and Fiber Packaging.

The company’s foodservice offering includes single and double wall paper cups for hot and cold drinks, plates, wraps, bowls and a range of food-to-go packaging and accessories.
