Altor Solutions reported that it diverted more than one million pounds of expanded polystyrene (EPS) from landfill sites in 2025 through its recycling programmes and partnerships.
The company’s efforts include customer collaborations, EPS drop-off points at all 19 of its North American facilities, and increased use of EmeraldPak, a packaging product with a high percentage of recycled EPS.
The amount recovered is equivalent to filling more than 1,400 refuse trucks, based on standard packaging densities.
EPS is commonly used for protecting temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals, perishable goods, appliances, furniture, and other products during transport.
According to Altor, uptake of its recycling initiatives grew steadily throughout the year, driven by both customer interest and greater awareness around EPS recycling streams.
The adoption rate of EmeraldPak also increased due to the demand for protective packaging options that support recycled materials without compromising thermal performance.
Altor said it will continue to expand EPS recycling infrastructure and develop further recycled-content solutions as part of its “Stairway to Green” programme.
The company has also indicated plans to increase customer education efforts related to sustainable packaging practices.
Altor CEO Terry Moody said: “Diverting over one million pounds of EPS in a single year is something our entire team and our customers should be proud of. This progress reflects what’s possible when manufacturers, customers, and recyclers work together.
“While we’re proud of what we’ve accomplished at Altor, this milestone represents another step toward a more regenerative approach to packaging value chains. We’re excited about the future of regenerative, closed-loop systems.”
In 2024, Altor Solutions acquired Lifoam Industries, a subsidiary of Jadex, a US-based manufacturer specialising in material science for $137m in cash.
Lifoam produces temperature-controlled packaging items such as thermal shippers and gel packs, which are used in the healthcare, commercial, and retail sectors.
Altor Solutions is based in St Louis, Missouri, and designs and manufactures industrial protective packaging and cold-chain solutions.
Founded in 1957, the company works with a variety of materials ranging from conventional plastics to plant-based alternatives.
