Dreco and Mondi to develop 50% recycled detergent pack

The move was aimed at making the pack more circular while preserving moisture protection and product quality.

Dreco has redesigned its powder detergent packaging with Mondi to include 50% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic.

The move was aimed at making the pack more circular while preserving moisture protection and product quality.

Dreco’s requirements included moisture resistance, reduced use of virgin plastic without losing strength in daily handling, stable print quality and shelf presentation, and alignment with longer-term sustainability objectives and future regulation.

Mondi and Dreco developed a re/loop PillowBag structure containing 50% mechanically recycled PCR material to meet those needs.

Dreco owner and managing director Milo Drehsen said: “Reducing the environmental impact of our packaging is a key priority for us, but performance is critical for products like powder detergent. Working with Mondi has enabled us to introduce a solution that combines high recycled content with the protection our products require.”

The pack maintains product integrity without depending on high levels of virgin plastic.

It is also intended to provide consistent print quality and an easy-opening format for users.

The structure is designed to work with polyolefin mechanical recycling streams.

Mondi said material traceability is supported through its ISCC PLUS mass balance certification.

According to the companies, the project shows that moisture-sensitive FMCG packaging can incorporate a relatively high share of recycled content without affecting quality, dependability or preparedness for regulation.

The new packaging is already on sale through retailers in Germany.

Mondi Békéscsaba managing director Sandor Kardos commented: “Together with Dreco, we have developed a high PCR packaging solution for a moisture-sensitive application that is designed for recycling, helping our customer to prepare for regulatory requirements while meeting today’s market expectations.”

Earlier this month, Mondi introduced a fully recyclable brown kraftliner pack with white digital printing for glass manufacturer Riedel Glas, created for the launch of the All American Bourbon glass range.
