DS Smith has teamed up with Danish multinational brewing company Carlsberg to test its new Round Wrap packaging in Poland.

The fibre-based multi-pack is designed to reduce shrink film use on pallets and lower CO₂ emissions.

The Round Wrap, made with Arcwise technology, is being trialled for the Carlsberg, Garage and Somersby beer ranges.

It features rounded corners and is fully recyclable.

DS Smith expects it to help Carlsberg Poland cut carbon emissions by up to 224t each year.

The design aims to keep products secure during transport and improve brand visibility across the 360-degree surface of each pack.

A DS Smith and Toluna survey found that consumers preferred Round Wrap’s wrap-around design for its shelf appeal compared with standard packaging.

Tests showed that the rounded design reduced empty space by 4.2% and made the pack about 17% lighter than boxes with 90-degree corners.

The DS Smith design team assessed the packaging using its circular design metrics (CDM) tool, which tracks eight indicators including carbon footprint, material efficiency and supply chain performance.

DS Smith East Europe packaging division regional managing director Reinier Schlatmann stated: “We are proud to partner with Carlsberg Poland for a trial launch of the DS Smith Round Wrap. This sustainable packaging innovation was developed using our circular design metrics, offering durability, supply chain advantages and branding opportunities.

“This is aligned with our company wide commitment to redefining packaging for a changing world and our Now & Next Sustainability strategy and mission, as we help our customers to design out waste and move towards a circular economy.”

In September 2025, DS Smith partnered Slovenia-based BSH Nazarje to develop a new sustainable packaging solution for Bosch hand mixers

BSH Nazarje is part of the BSH Home Appliances Group.

The collaboration replaced the previous expanded polystyrene foam inserts with a fully recyclable corrugated cardboard alternative.
