DS Smith has created a fibre-based packaging solution for Austria’s Privatbrauerei Hirt to support the brewer’s new online shop and growing e-commerce operations.

The offering is designed to protect 0.5 litre and 0.75 litre glass bottles during storage and transport.

It includes cap and base securing features, shock-absorbing edges and internal tabs, and with no plastic component, is also fully recyclable.

Privatbrauerei Hirt Austria managing director Heimo Schader stated:Our new packaging combines functionality with design and it can be assembled quickly and efficiently while being versatile for our diverse types of product ranges.

“We are excited that our customers can now enjoy our premium and high-quality products when they purchase from our new online shop. The fibre-based packaging also offers ample space for our impactful and recognisable branding, and this ensures an exceptional unboxing experience.”

DS Smith used its circular design metrics tools to assess sustainability performance across carbon footprint, materials reduction, reuse potential, supply-chain efficiency and recyclability.

The design fits bottles of different shapes and sizes and reduces the need for additional internal supports.

Privatbrauerei Hirt has been brewing for more than 755 years and produces beers, lemonades, vinegars, spirits and both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

DS Smith Austria packaging managing director Dieter Glawischnig added: "Our mission was to develop a smart, sustainable packaging that meets the high standards expected of premium beverages and uses less materials, while providing a comprehensive and robust product protection in terms of casing.

“This is a crucial factor and key consideration for many of our customers in today's booming e-commerce landscape.”

DS Smith, acquired by International Paper in January 2025, operates in 34 countries and focuses on fibre-based packaging under its “Now and Next” sustainability strategy.

In early November 2025, DS Smith teamed up with Fantasy Forts, a Dutch maker of DIY construction play kits for children, to create sustainable packaging and structural designs for its products.

DS Smith’s specialists refined the design and composition of the kits, focusing on optimising folding mechanisms, die-cutting techniques and the integration of accessories.

The play and packaging components are produced entirely from recyclable corrugated cardboard, designed to provide durability and scaleability in manufacturing.
