Emerald Packaging has acquired the flexible packaging assets of Blower-Dempsay for an undisclosed amount and opened a second operation in California, US.

According to a company release, the transaction is the first takeover in Emerald Packaging's 63-year history.

It also stated that the new site in Santa Ana gives the company a base to supply produce clients in Arizona and northern Mexico.

Blower-Dempsay president Brad Jordan said: "It's rare to align with another family-owned business that shares such a similar culture and view of how to operate a business, treat employees and support valued customers.

"We look forward to exploring synergies that are mutually beneficial, with the added advantage of having Emerald operate within our Santa Ana facility."

The addition is set to lift its workforce size from 250 to more than 300 by the end of the year.

Emerald added that the Santa Ana location will also place it closer to its biggest customers.

It reduces travel time to the Mexicali crossing to about three hours, compared with more than a day previously, which the company said is important for serving customers in that area.

The facility also provides backup production capability in the event of disrupted operations.

Equipment at the Santa Ana plant includes an eight colour, 52in-wide Windmoeller & Hoelscher printing press, two Nordmeccanica laminators, two slitters and a thermal oxidiser.

It intends to install additional slitters with laser and hot needle capability, as well as a second printing press.

Emerald president Pallavi Joyappa said: "The opportunity to expand Emerald Packaging's footprint and acquire the manufacturing assets of Pacific Flexible Solutions checked every box.

"This location allows us to set up shop close to a key customer base while also close to our Union City, California, headquarters with equipment and capabilities that match our own. Blower-Dempsay had excellent relationships with their employees, with a culture that very much reflects our own."

Earlier this month, Mondi introduced a fully recyclable brown kraftliner pack with white digital printing for glass manufacturer Riedel Glas, created for the launch of the All American Bourbon glass range.
