PureCycle Technologies and Toppan have partnered to develop more sustainable options for flexible films and thermoformed packaging.
The collaboration has resulted in a snack bar wrapper containing more than 30% recycled content, produced using PureCycle’s PureFive resin.
The companies report that the wrapper meets snack brands’ requirements for print quality and function while aiming to reduce environmental impact.
Building on this initial project, PureCycle and Toppan plan to expand their efforts to additional thermoforming uses, such as snack cups and microwaveable containers.
PureCycle Technologies market, application and product development senior director Pete Dias said: "Our partnership with TOPPAN exemplifies the power of collaboration in solving the packaging industry's most pressing sustainability challenges.
"TOPPAN's expertise in both flexible and thermoformed packaging, combined with our high-quality recycled resin, enables brand owners to meet their sustainability commitments without compromising on quality, safety, or performance. Together, we're proving that premium packaging performance can be achieved using recycled content."
PureCycle’s recycling process uses dissolution technology to convert post-consumer polypropylene into a resin that the company says is comparable to virgin material.
The resulting product is suitable for food-contact uses and integrates into existing manufacturing processes.
Toppan Packaging Americas operates across North America, Latin America, and Europe through 22 sites, with brands such as Alloyd, EnviroFlex, Highland Packaging Solutions, and TEQ.
Toppan Packaging Americas senior sustainability manager Astrid Torres commented: "Through our partnership with PureCycle, we're advancing solutions that foster a society focused on well-being and sustainability while safeguarding our planet for future generations.
"The snack bar wrapper we've developed showcases the printability and performance that leading brands demand, while incorporating meaningful recycled content. This is exactly the kind of packaging innovation needed to build a truly circular economy."
In December 2025, PureCycle announced its recycled polypropylene was being used in licensed souvenir cinema cups, as part of a partnership between Golden Link North America and Churchill Container.
