The company says that for opaque rigid medical packaging, the new styrene-free copolyester can be a sustainable alternative to high-impact polystyrene (HIPS).

The material was developed for applications such as work-in-progress trays, thermoformed pharmaceutical packaging and packaging for medical devices or kits.

Eastman Chemical market development for medical packaging representative Aneta Clark said that Eastalite is easier to process, and can be available for brand owners and medical device manufacturers at a price comparable to HIPS.

"This new opaque material is another demonstration of Eastman’s commitment to providing innovative, cost-effective and sustainable solutions to meet the needs of the medical packaging industry," Clark added.

Thermoforming Eastalite into rigid trays cuts down processing and inspection time, waste and cleaning and processing costs. The company also claims that extruded Eastalite provides better tear strength and products that are made of the new copolyester can be designed with deep undercuts, resulting in better hinge life and less stress whitening compared to packaging moulded from HIPS.

The new copolyester material, which is compliant with select ISO 10993 requirements for medical device biocompatibility, is free of butadiene, bisphenol A, bisphenol S, ortho-phthalates, polyvinyl chloride or halogens such as chlorine or bromine.
