FIXIT GRUPPE has streamlined its paper bag packaging across European markets through a project with Mondi, a move that reduced related greenhouse gas emissions by 135 tonnes of CO₂ compared to the prior year.

A supplier to DIY retailers across Europe, the building materials group had been managing a broad mix of packaging types.

Different product features, climate conditions and national rules had led to a varied range of paper bag grades and formats in different countries.

According to Mondi, this made it harder to use the same packaging approach across markets and to advance sustainability goals in a more consistent way.

The company said that the new project has helped bring a simpler packaging approach across different markets in Europe, with a uniform portfolio for more than 100 products.

Fixit Gruppe research and development director Bernhard Zott said: “We needed packaging that protects a wide range of building materials, is practical on construction sites and supports our climate strategy. Mondi assessed everything thoroughly and worked closely with our teams to improve functionality, sustainability and quality requirements.”

To review the existing set-up, Mondi carried out an audit at its bag application centre in Frantschach, Austria. Its evaluation focused on paper grammage, barrier needs, and plastic reduction potential.

After the assessment, the two companies agreed on a single portfolio of standardised paper bag formats for Fixit Gruppe’s building materials range.

The revised line-up was designed to meet the needs of different products sold in several European markets.

Mondi supplied sack kraft paper from its own mills and produced paper valve bags intended to protect powdered building materials from moisture during handling and storage.

The packaging was also reviewed under the 4evergreen fibre-based packaging recyclability evaluation protocol.

Mondi Italy paper bags international key account manager Davide Battiston said: “This project shows how we help customers solve complex packaging challenges while reducing environmental impact.

“By analysing Fixit Gruppe’s full product range and applying our paper making and converting expertise, we developed a standardised solution without compromising on performance. It is also a great example of how close collaboration with customers can unlock long-term value across their packaging portfolio.”
