Mondelēz International has substituted rigid polyethylene terephthalate (PET) trays with FSC-certified paper trays across its main cookie lines in Europe within the biscuits segment, according to a press release posted on My News Desk

The switch applies to more than 115 products sold under eight brands. These include Cadbury, Chips Ahoy!, Freia, Lacta and Marabou.

These items are distributed in more than 25 European countries, including the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Poland, Spain and the Nordic region.

The project covers approximately 28,000 tonnes of cookies made each year.

Mondelēz estimates the move will cut the use of virgin plastic by 2,200tpa, which is around 80% less than the previous tray format.

The change follows earlier packaging work in the UK.

This included a 2025 trial of paper tubs for Cadbury Heroes and the introduction of paper outer packs for Cadbury Animals and Mini Fingers Biscuits Multipacks.

The tray change is part of a wider programme affecting bakery packaging.

Mondelēz International Europe biscuits packaging director Olivier Kintzig said: “This is a transformation we are proud to have engineered from the ground up. Replacing rigid plastic with paper across 115 products, eight brands and 25 European markets in a matter of months required rethinking every layer of our packaging—from tray design to logistics.

“As packaging professionals, this is exactly the kind of bold, systemic change we exist to deliver.”
