Sidel has partnered with The Coca-Cola Company (TCCC) in its ‘spiral’ PET bottle project for the development of a new design for the Fanta bottles.

The project is part of Coca-Cola’s aim to design and develop a new packaging shape for its Fanta brand that will be applicable to both PET and glass bottles, in order to deliver a protectable new global standard for the brand.

Coca-Cola packaging engineer Gregory Bentley said: “By embedding the supplier’s knowledge and experience from the very first steps of this journey, we have ensured viable bottle forming, filling and performance.

“We optimised the grip profile and the angular base orientation to retain the bottle geometry once filled.”

“It was great to count on Sidel as part of this project as a very skilled and responsive partner.”

Designed by Drink Works, the new PET bottle features a spiral and is based on a series of ribs decorated with small bubbles and a torsion in the bottom half, thereby giving the bottle an unusual, asymmetric structure.

The new spiral shape of the bottle required the right understanding of how PET behaves under pressure, particularly related to the carbonation of the beverage that can potentially deform the bottle sections and in turn lead to the spilling of the drink.

Sidel packaging expert Jérome Neveu said: “It is definitively critical that all opposing sides of the bottle have the same developed length to avoid issues with perpendicularity.

“We optimised the grip profile and the angular base orientation to retain the bottle geometry once filled.”

Similar to other bottles that were previously used for the brand, the new bottle is meant to be produced to be 100% recyclable.

A similar shape has also been developed for the entire Fanta bottle family and it is currently available for 500ml, 1l, 1.5l and 2l formats.
