The Sonopost plant is scheduled to open between July and August.

Sonoco Europe Paper and Industrial Converted Products vice-president and general manager Adam Wood said: “European manufacturing and retailers are aggressively looking for proven solutions to address mandates related to sustainability.

“With [our] industry-leading Sonopost technology, we have the privilege of helping European manufacturers make significant progress towards their sustainability goals.”

The Sonopost corner posts are long and hollow tubes made from solid paperboard, designed to protect edges in packaging.

The packaging technology is designed for large appliances, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) units and similar products that demand higher protection.

The fully recyclable corner posts can be bailed with existing scrap paper and recycled in the paper stream after use.

Mr Wood said: “We believe we have a responsibility to continue developing more sustainable packaging solutions to help protect and preserve our planet for future generations.

“Sonopost technology is an ideal solution for protecting large appliances against the rigours of new and existing distribution channels, from a global packaging company with a deep history in recycling and sustainability.”

In April, Sonoco sold its domestic display and packaging business to mill-to-market company Hood Container for $80m in cash.

Hood Container specialises in point-of-purchase display design, manufacturing and fulfilment and offers contract packaging services for consumer product customers, currently serving more than 250 brands.
