Germany-based pharmaceutical packaging specialist August Faller has developed a new information carrier solution that combines a leaflet with a patient emergency card in a sealed film.

Previous information carriers for pharmaceutical products have come in the form of banderols, labels and adhesive dots.

As well as a standard regulatory leaflet, cartons for pharmaceutical products often contain information carriers, such as patient alert cards and medical alert cards, which allow doctors to identify patients in the event of an emergency.

Developed for an undisclosed pharmaceutical company, August Faller’s new combination product enables an outsert to be combined with a patient alert card in up to three languages and then sealed in film.

The perforated film protects the information carriers from dirt and wear and keeps the product flat due to its low shrink tension.

“Multiple high-resolution camera systems ensure that the correct information carriers are precisely combined."

The new combination packaging also helps pharmacists to reduce their expenses, since the combined leaflets can be dispensed into cartons as a single product, and eliminates the need to insert an additional information carrier in a separate leaflet.

Manufactured at August Faller’s plant in Binzen, Germany, the combination product protective film has a tolerance of one millimetre.

August Faller application and process engineer Christiana Klüppelberg said: “Multiple high-resolution camera systems ensure that the correct information carriers are precisely combined.

“The system recognises faulty products and shunts them pneumatically towards the shrink tunnel without interrupting the production flow.”
