Paper-based packaging company Ranpak has launched a sustainable thermal protection liner for packaging.

The RecyCold climaliner reportedly keeps products cold for up to 48 hours, with the thermal paper offering flexibility to enable multiple configurations and box size flexibility. This is for the aim of reducing food waste and associated costs.

The technology can support three distinct temperature ranges, spanning ambient products kept near room temperature, chilled products typically stored in a refrigerator, or frozen products below 0°C/32°F. This represents critical shipping requirements across the fast-growing mealkit, ready-to-use meals, online grocery, and specialty foods segments.

The thermal liner can work alone or as a key component in a comprehensive Cold Chain solution along with RecyCold cool packs, a technology acquired by Ranpak currently available in Europe and North America.

Ranpak CEO and chairman Omar Asali commented: “The increase in shipping of temperature-controlled items increases the need for scalable and sustainable technologies.”

In an interview with Packaging Gateway, Ranpak’s cold chain business development manager Anne de Rouw stated that the cold chain packaging market is seeing continual growth, hence the company’s ongoing investments in cold chain production.
