It features biodegradable properties that complies with international standards and is supported by testing.

It delivers similar performance characteristics, including coater runability, glueability, and cohesive coating strength when compared with traditional paper or paperboard coatings.

The solution could be used to replace the majority of synthetic binders typically used in coatings, although accurate replacement levels are subject to coating formulations and end-use requirements, the company stated.

The binder meets the compostability requirements of the American market via ASTM D6400 and D6868, and the international standards of ISO 1860, a study sponsored by Trinseo and conducted by Organic Waste Systems revealed.

Trinseo plans to test its innovation in aqueous and anaerobic conditions to further understand the range of compostability LIGOS BH 7340 SCE possesses.

The move forms part of the company’s endeavour to advance sustainable and compostable binder solutions.

Trinseo Paper & Board global innovation leader Gregory Welsch said: “LIGOS BH 7340 SCE Binder is yet another example of Trinseo’s commitment to delivering sustainable solutions.

“By offering a compostable binder, we can reduce the environmental impact of waste caused by the breakdown of paper products, in turn improving the sustainability of the entire paperboard industry.

In October this year, Trinseo announced its decision to close the ethylbenzene styrene monomer manufacturing facility in Terneuzen, the Netherlands.
