Ecotech London has opened a new PET recycling plant in Rainham, East London, in order to provide an eco-friendly alternative to virgin PET.

Spread over an area of around 3,716m², the £6.5m plant will be capable of processing nearly 18,000t of PET bottles annually.

The facility primarily produces A-Grade hot-washed PET flakes, which can be used in thermoforming and other high-spec applications. It has created more than 20 new jobs.

German firm STF will work in collaboration with Ecotech on the project.

STF has already supplied a full turnkey end-to-end line to Ecotech, which is considered to be the first such machine in the UK.

Ecotech chief executive Javed Mawji was quoted by Packaging News as saying: "There was a soft opening in July and now the site is fully operational.
