Packaging giant Amcor is collaborating with UK start-up Kelpi to examine next-generation coating solutions.

The arrangement fits with Amcor’s approach of finding and developing packaging options that meet sustainability goals without reducing functionality.

Amcor’s research and development (R&D) teams are reviewing Kelpi’s coating platform, which uses a seaweed-based material.

It is intended to provide barrier properties and work with recycling systems for fibre-based packaging.

The assessment could add to the range of products in Amcor’s AmFiber fibre-based packaging platform.

The companies said possible effects of bio-based coatings include less dependence on feedstocks derived from fossil fuels and wider use of renewable inputs, which may help reduce carbon footprint.

Amcor and Kelpi will look at whether the technology can be developed into commercially feasible and scalable products for customers in multiple consumer goods categories, while supporting a circular packaging model.

Amcor AmFiber R&D director Peter Ettridge said: “This collaboration reflects how we are advancing our material innovation pipeline, and it supports the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s call for accelerated innovation in paper-based flexible packaging.

“We are excited by the potential of Kelpi’s technology, which combines processability, gas and moisture barrier performance, and paper recyclability.”

Amcor Corporate Venturing and Open Innovation vice-president Frank Lehmann commented: “Partnering with companies like Kelpi is a key part of how we bring new technologies into our innovation ecosystem.

“Its innovative approach to leveraging nature-sourced materials that won’t compromise packaging performance is promising, and we are excited to explore opportunities to scale the technology within our global packaging portfolio.”

Earlier this month, Amcor introduced its Moda rotary vacuum chamber sealing system at Barra Mansa Alimentos, a meat processor in Brazil. 

The move forms part of Amcor’s broader push in Latin America, where the company has been investing in packaging technology, production capacity, equipment, and technical and sales support.
