Berlin Packaging buys Greek glass packaging company

Elias Valavanis supplies glass bottles and jars for olive oil, wine, spirits, soft drinks and water.

US-based hybrid packaging supplier Berlin Packaging has acquired Greek glass packaging supplier Elias Valavanis.

Based in Larissa, Elias Valavanis supplies bottles and jars for the food and beverage industries.

As well as extending Berlin Packaging’s Mediterranean presence, Elias Valavanis will bring new customers to the company.

The financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed.

Berlin Packaging CEO and president Bill Hayes said: “As we enter important new regions like the Balkans, we look for industry-leading companies that share our strategic focus, growth mindset, our dedication to customer thrill and our winning culture.

Elias Valavanis checks all these boxes and more, and they will help us extend our Mediterranean coverage while adding an exciting new customer base.”

Berlin Packaging Europe CEO Paolo Recrosio said: “Elias Valavanis is the perfect partner for us as we expand our operations to the Balkans and continue to augment our Mediterranean glass business.

“Elias Valavanis shares our passion for glass design and artistry and our commitment to helping our customers grow their business by offering industry-leading packaging products and services.”

This is Berlin Packaging’s fifth European acquisition this year and its fifteenth since 2016.

Elias Valavanis has locations in Bulgaria, Romania and Greece, as well as a glass recycling facility.

It has a total of more than 1,500 customers in these regions and provides value-added services, including package structural design and decoration capabilities.

Following the acquisition, Berlin Packaging will hold all Elias Valavanis’ employees and locations.

Elias Valavanis CEO and namesake Elias Valavanis said: “I am excited about combining our company with Berlin Packaging as I know that, together, we can accelerate investments in our products, capabilities and employees like never before.”

In February, Berlin Packaging acquired Sodis-Uhart and its subsidiary Audoubert, both specialise in offering glass and metal packaging in France.

Last month, the company acquired UK-based plastic packaging manufacturer Raepak.
