Active job postings in the packaging sector dropped 14.2% over the last month (June 19 to July 19), GlobalData analysis suggests. Open vacancies identified fell to 17,876 from a peak of 21,229 on June 26. However, this doesn’t seem to be cause for concern as it is largely due to a large number of closed posts: a total of 6,464 in July so far alone.

Although some of these will undoubtably have gone unfilled, it suggests that June was a stand-out month for new hires. Other data also supports this idea, with Austrian multi-national Alpla, for example, having increased its active number of listings by 632% since April and paper packaging giant International Paper by 15.7%.

Though the decreases were generally consistent across jobs in the sector, jobs related to the environment and digitalisation saw particularly large falls of 20% and 14%, respectively. This is perhaps indicative of companies having filled environment related postings after pushes towards sustainability earlier in the year, such as Alpla’s move towards renewable energy through its new power purchase agreements with Statkraft

Maintenance workers and machinists remained in high demand, together making up over half of the open job listings, although they were also the positions with the largest reductions in hires.
