Sweden-based packaging company PulPac has announced the signing of a new license agreement with Matrix Pack, a European manufacturer of paper straws and biodegradable lids for hot drinks.

As part of this agreement, PulPac will license its Dry Moulded Fiber technology to Matrix for use in manufacturing its sustainable product range, with an initial focus on lids of hot and cold beverages in the North American and European markets.

Matrix business development director Dionysis Valentis said: “At Matrix Pack, we always have a progressive mindset, identifying market changes, adapting accordingly, and having what it takes to be industry leaders.

“We feel that the time for change is now, and we believe our investment in Dry Molded Fiber technology, starting with hot and cold drink lids in North America and Europe, will allow us to further develop our technology stack, product range, geographical reach, and ultimately add value to our partners and customers.”

Currently, Matrix operates a total of seven manufacturing plants across North America and Europe.

Since its establishment in 2009, it has strengthened its position as a sustainable and disposable drinking straw products manufacturer across the globe.

One of the major reasons for the company’s growth, according to Pulpac, is its focus on sustainable manufacturing practices and the use of raw materials, which will now be complemented with PulPac’s Dry Moulded Fibre technology license.

PulPac describes its fibre as a resource- and cost-efficient fibre-forming technology that can be used by its packaging industry partners, via licensing process, to replace single-use plastic at scale.

PulPac CCO Sanna Fager said: “Matrix Pack has the ambition, drive, and willingness to be a trailblazer for sustainable packaging in Europe and North America – they are a true changemaker in the packaging world.

“We have seen Matrix Pack make impressive progress over the years, and we look forward to joining forces to further accelerate Dry Moulded Fiber production.”

Last month, PulPac signed a non-exclusive partnership deal with US-based thermoforming company Tek Pak.
