Sustainable packaging and paper company Mondi has developed a new paperbag solution intended to rollpack mattresses.

Dubbed Protector Bag ExpandForm, the flexible and recyclable solution is designed to replace the existing plastic packaging.

According to Mondi, the paper bag is puncture resistant and supports printing, enabling customisation by brands.

Protector Bag ExpandForm is made with the company’s kraft papers and renewable materials that enable easy disposal and recycling in existing paper waste streams.

The new breathable packaging can emit gas that can evaporate easily.

It will also offer dimensional stability throughout the delivery, paving the way for savings in terms of shipping and storage costs compared with plastic rollpack wrapping.

Mondi paper bags sales director Fabio Barbieri said: “Consumers are actively seeking packaging that is responsibly sourced and easy to recycle. This new solution ticks both boxes: it is easier to open and to dispose compared to large rolls of plastic and avoidable packaging used previously.

“Protector Bag ExpandForm needs no secondary packaging to protect the product and will be stable throughout the whole delivery journey.”

Mondi also announced a partnership with mattresses and sleeping products manufacturer Megaflex Schaumstoff, making it the first customer of Protector Bag ExpandForm.

Mondi will also work with machine producer FillMatic to help Megaflex in its transition from plastic rollpacking equipment to the paper-based alternative, which is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Megaflex Schaumstoff managing director Karsten Löhr said: “The Protector Bag ExpandForm is a perfect fit for our mattresses and the plastic saving we estimate is significant – over 18t every year!

“The paper packaging is appreciated by our customers, and a big step forward in our sustainability journey, and thanks to our good partnership with Mondi we can use more sustainable packaging, that positively contributes to our sustainability commitments.”

Last month, Mondi announced that it is investing in different advanced technologies to boost the capacity of its FunctionalBarrier Paper range.
