US-based household cleaning and consumer chemicals supplier SC Johnson and reverse logistics start-up Molecoola have partnered to encourage recycling in São Paulo, Brazil.

The partnership will aim to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. The companies will focus on encouraging the communities in the region to recycle.

According to Brazilian Association of Companies for Public Cleaning and Special Residues Management, Brazil discards over 25 million tonnes of recyclable solid waste annually.

The move is also a part of SC Johnson’s commitment towards recycling and sustainability.

SC Johnson Brazil executive director and general manager Tatiana Ganem said: “We are excited to partner with Molecoola to help increase recycling rates in Brazil.

Customers can return all SC Johnson’s branded product such as Mr Muscle, Glade and OFF! at Molecoola’s locations.

By returning the empty products, they can earn points that can be exchanged for goods and services using an app. Consumers can also opt to donate the points to charities in São Paulo communities.

The company has collected over 360t of recyclable materials since partnering with SC Johnson in November 2018.

Molecoola stores accept aerosol cans, beverage cans, paper, cardboard, chipboard, plastic, electronics and cooking oil.

Molecoola CEO Rodrigo Jobim said: “We are grateful to SC Johnson for their partnership in this important initiative.

“With their help, we are educating consumers on the importance of protecting the environment, changing behaviours and creating a circular economy that provides direct benefit to consumers, recyclers and, most importantly, the environment.”

A few days ago, SC Johnson initiated a global partnership with Plastic Bank to address the issues of ocean plastic waste and poverty.
