Smurfit Kappa Group is to install Electronics For Imaging’s (EFI) single-pass LED inkjet corrugated packaging press at one of its plants in Iberia in a move to improve the production of corrugated packaging.
Smurfit Kappa will install an EFI Nozomi C18000 single-pass LED inkjet corrugated packaging press later this month with the aim to deliver high-quality print production in larger volumes.
The company’s plant manufactures boxes and trays, including ready-to-sell packaging that requires higher-quality, full-colour imaging.
The partnership with EFI will reportedly allow the company to establish more effective processes and deliver ready-to-sell, high-quality print packaging.
Smurfit Kappa Spain, Portugal and Morocco CEO Ignacio Sevillano said: “Our ability to achieve high-quality print production in larger volumes with the Nozomi press will mean our customers can establish better supply chain strategies and be more creative by producing multiple designs – all of which can help our customers sell more products and reduce their time to market, while employing a leaner, more sustainable packaging programme.”
The 71in-wide Nozomi press, which adds to the existing three digital printers operating at Smurfit Kappa’s plants Spain, Portugal and Morocco, has high-end grayscale imaging capabilities and running speeds up to 246 linear feet per minute.

By GlobalDataUsing the press, Smurfit can provide short-run, medium-run and complex versioned jobs to its customers.
The Iberia plant currently undertakes six-colour analogue printing on single-channel B, C, E and double-channel B/C and C/E board.
With an ability to run the same grades of a single and double-channel board, the Nozomi press prints in six colours and white.
The company also noted that the press helps overcome the challenges presented by digital corrugated board production.
The Nozomi press also improves production speeds of up to 10,000, 35×35-inch boards per hour two-up.
