Plastic solution providers Borealis and Borouge have introduced a new grade of high density polyethylene (HDPE) lids for drink bottles.

The new BorPure MB5568 grade has been developed using Borealis’ Borstar polyethylene (PE) technology, which enables integration of PE mechanical and processing properties for specific applications, using less material without affecting performance.

Application of the grade be helpful in reducing carbon footprint in the drinks sector, while supporting sustainability. It also provides better organoleptic properties that keep bottle contents fresh.

Designed to have better rigidity and resistance to environmental stress cracking, the HDPE grade is lightweight and supports standard lids for bottled carbonated soft drinks, juices, iced tea and water.

Borealis advanced packaging and fibre marketing manager Russell Tew said that the new grade would reduce the amount of plastic in the drinks industry.

"Cost reduction in bottle production is a key factor in competitiveness for the beverage industry, and lowering the volume of material used in caps is a focus element of that initiative," Tew added.
