Upon reaching full output, the plant will provide 600 kilo tonnes of rolled material each year across the automotive, drink container, and specialty goods sectors.
An on-site recycling centre will process more than 15 billion discarded beverage cans annually.
Machinery needed for commercial deliveries is currently undergoing testing.
The business is qualifying products with buyers ahead of scheduled commercial despatches in the second quarter of 2027.
The site is expected to employ up to 1,000 people once fully operational.
Novelis president and CEO Steve Fisher said: “Producing the first coil on the cold mill is an important step in commissioning Bay Minette and increasing the supply of rolled aluminium in the United States.
“With the North American market being capacity constrained, this investment will help Novelis meet long-term market demand, strengthen our US manufacturing footprint and increase the use of recycled content in our products.”
Novelis recorded $18.4bn in net sales for fiscal year 2026, supplying aerospace, automotive, canning, and specialty purchasers throughout North America, South America, Europe, and Asia.
The company is owned by Hindalco Industries Limited, the aluminium and copper division of Mumbai-based conglomerate Aditya Birla Group.
