UK’s Beatson Clark creates environmentally friendly glass bottle for Henderson's Relish

UK-based Beatson Clark designed a new glass bottle for South Yorkshire-based condiment brand Henderson’s Relish.

The new lighter and more environmentally friendly bottles were manufactured from 30% recycled material, almost 10% of which was collected locally and processed in Beatson Clark’s onsite recycling plant in Rotherham, UK.

Developed using Beatson Clark’s sculpting software, the new 284ml bottle features ‘Henderson’s Relish’ embossed above its label and ‘Henderson’s Sheffield’ on the base.

Beverage Can Makers Europe and European Metal Packaging merge to form new entity

Beverage Can Makers Europe (BCME) merged its operations with European Metal Packaging (Empac) to form a new entity, Metal Packaging Europe.

The merged entity is expected to produce around 85 billion cans annually for the beverage, food, health and beauty, household and industrial markets.

Gerresheimer and Ompi to provide standardised solutions to pharmaceutical packaging sector

Germany’s Gerresheimer signed a mutual agreement with Stevanato Group brand Ompi to provide standardised solutions for the pharmaceutical packaging industry.

As part of the deal, Gerresheimer will use the Ompi EZ-fill packaging technology to develop its new Gx ready-to-fills (RTF) vials, which can be washed and sterilised in trays or in nests and tubs.

The Gx RTF vials will be based on the company's existing vials, such as PharmaPlus and Elite Glass.

Greenall’s The Original London Dry Gin brand unveils new bottle design

G&J Distillers unveiled a new bottle design and packaging for Greenall’s The Original London Dry Gin, which is the UK’s second best-selling standard gin brand.

Set to be introduced across the UK in May, the new design was inspired by gin bottles used by the distillery in the 1700s.

The new bottle design features one Union Jack stitched on the back and another on the front label to reflect the gin’s British heritage.

Unifi wins FDA LNO to produce food-grade packaging from recycled PET bottles

US-based Unifi secured a letter of no objection (LNO) from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to produce food-grade packaging solutions from its Repreve brand of post-consumer recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic flakes.

With the approval, Unifi will use the recycled plastic flakes to produce food-grade packaging solutions, such as clamshells, trays and baskets for fresh fruits, vegetables and shell eggs.

In September 2016, the company opened its new Repreve bottle processing centre in North Carolina, US, to produce the recycled plastic flakes.

Huhtamaki to establish new paper cup manufacturing unit in Ukraine

Finland-based Huhtamaki unveiled its plan to set up a new greenfield paper cup manufacturing facility in Kiev, Ukraine, as part of efforts to expand its foodservice business in Eastern Europe.

In 2002, the company made its debut in Ukraine and serves the local market by importing products mainly from its manufacturing units in Poland.

Once completed, the new facility will produce a complete range of paper cups for cold and hot drinks under Huhtamaki’s Foodservice Europe-Asia-Oceania business segment.

Bosch Packaging to unveil new solutions for liquid pharmaceuticals sector

Bosch Packaging Technology was set to launch its new range of solutions for liquid pharmaceutical applications at the upcoming Interpack event to be held in May.

The solutions to be presented at the show include a fermenter that can be used to produce pilot batches of cells for cultivation purposes, such as for cancer medication.

Using different mixing technologies, the machine processes batches between 8l and 50l via scale-up, and increases batch sizes to 200l.

Tetra Pak buys cheese manufacturing solution provider Johnson Industries International

Switzerland-based packaging giant Tetra Pak purchased US-based Johnson Industries International for an undisclosed sum.

The deal will enable Tetra Pak to boost its cheese technology portfolio and improve its position in the specific market segment worldwide.

Johnson Industries International president Grant Nesheim said: “This transaction means that our innovations will be supported by the global resources and leading expertise of Tetra Pak.

Germany’s Henkel to buy Darex Packaging Technologies for $1.05bn

Germany-based Henkel made a binding offer to purchase US-based Darex Packaging Technologies from GCP Applied Technologies for $1.05bn.

To meet the requirements of the cash-and-debt-free deal, GCP will begin a consultation process with the relevant works councils and labour unions.

Once completed, the company expects to enter a definitive purchase and sale agreement that will be subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals.

Spain’s Covinil invests in new Bobst Integrated AlOx metalliser

Spain-based converter Covinil made an undisclosed investment to purchase a new solution, a K5000 2,450mm vacuum metalliser, from Bobst, a Switzerland-based supplier of equipment and services to the packaging and label industries.

The newly purchased metalliser, which is an integrated solution for the conversion of aluminium oxide (AlOx) high-barrier transparent films, will help Covinil in increasing its capacity and to have the latest process innovations to explore new markets.

Covinil’s new metalliser features the complete range of Bobst process innovations, which include DarkNight for high-barrier metallised films, AluBond for high metal adhesion and AlOx for high-barrier transparent films.
