American flexible and specialty rigid packaging manufacturer Printpack plans to spend nearly $26m to expand its manufacturing operations in Newport News, Virginia, US.

The expansion is expected to boost the company's production capacity and open up 50 new jobs.

"Our well-established, capable workforce provides us a solid base of expertise to build upon."

Printpack has also announced plans to complete a separate recapitalisation programme this year to enhance its manufacturing capacities using advanced technology and industry equipment.

Printpack rigid operations director Jim Stevenson said: "We decided to expand in Virginia largely because our well-established, capable workforce provides us a solid base of expertise to build upon."

The company has been operating 21 manufacturing units across the US, Mexico and China, and offers barrier containers for food packaging through its rigid division.

The products support shelf stable packaging, which conveniently allows food storage in a consumer-friendly format.
