Sustainable dining and food packaging solutions provider Duni Group has partnered with UK-based Notpla to introduce a plastic-free packaging range featuring seaweed coating.
The new Alga product line is based on technology made of cardboard and Notpla's renewable seaweed coating.
Among others, the Dutch authorities have officially recognised the algae coating as truly plastic-free, in line with the pending EU directive on single-use plastics.
In addition to offering a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic packaging, the new range ensures that moisture and oils from food do not seep through, making it suitable for a variety of food types.
Notpla co-founder and co-CEO Pierre Paslier said: “We are thrilled to be partnering with Duni Group to see our seaweed-based, plastic-free solutions continue to improve the environmental impact of businesses all around the world.”
The Alga series comprises four products including a mealbox, a standard box and two trays designed to meet different requirements in the foodservice sector.
These products are produced with a focus on minimising energy consumption and raw material usage, further reducing their environmental impact.
Duni Food Packaging solutions product manager Caroline Tobiasson added: “The Alga series is more than just packaging – it represents the Duni Group’s quest to redefine the industry and reduce its environmental impact."
Earlier this month, Duni Group announced the acquisition of a majority stake in German reuse company Relevo.
