ProAmpac targets food spoilage reduction with new packaging line

Regulatory clearances from both the FDA and USDA cover the system for select meat, seafood, and dairy applications.

Flexible packaging and material science company ProAmpac has launched the ProActive Intelligence Shelf Protect (SP) series.

The line aims to curb food spoilage expenses and maintain perishable product quality for commercial food processors.

Regulatory clearances from both the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cover the system for select meat, seafood, and dairy applications.

Specifically, verified use cases include fresh beef, fresh pork, cooked sausage, deli meat, fresh salmon, and fresh cheese.

Created through an engineering partnership with Copperprotek, Shelf Protect Technology integrates patented biotechnology directly into the food-contact packaging film.

Copperprotek founder Javier Lavin said: “Our collaboration with ProAmpac’s material science team brings Copperprotek’s patented biotechnology into packaging formats that help food producers maintain product quality and extend shelf life.”

The resulting direct food-contact biotechnology packaging suppresses the microbial growth that drives food spoilage, thereby prolonging shelf life across storage and distribution networks.

Operationally, the material targets commercial waste generated by markdowns, shrink, and disposal.

The substrate preserves package clarity while leaving basic physical and seal properties unchanged.

Furthermore, sanctioned implementations require no auxiliary on-package labelling outside of a “use by” or “use or freeze by” date.

ProAmpac is deploying the innovation across three separate product lines: TruTite-SP-1000 boneless shrink bags and tubestock, ClearShield-SP-1000 bone-in shrink bags and tubestock, and Envio-SP-1000 forming and non-forming films.

The addition broadens the company’s ProActive Intelligence portfolio within the active and intelligent packaging technologies category.

ProAmpac senior innovation engineer Sam Kessler said: “For meat processors, every product lost represents an investment in production, packaging, and distribution that goes unrealised.

“Shelf Protect gives customers a new tool to help preserve that value, bringing active packaging technology to the shrink bags and films they rely on.”

In April, ProAmpac widened its pet food packaging portfolio, covering dry kibble, treats, freeze-dried products, retort packaging and pet litter.

The products include QUADFLEX LFQ, a quad-seal pouch intended for medium- and higher-weight pet food uses, including kibble packs of up to 40lb.
