OxySense® is the leading manufacturer of proprietary, optical oxygen analysers and permeation testing instruments, non-invasive headspace and dissolved oxygen studies and leak detection in the food, beverage, pharmaceutical, bio-medical and electronics packaging industries.

Non-invasive oxygen measurement systems and permeation testing instruments

Our key products include the fully integrated:

OxySense 5250i: this oxygen testing unit is part of OxySenses newest line of non-invasive oxygen monitoring and permeation systems. It is the oxygen measurement instrument of choice for labs and individuals who need to test or evaluate bottles, packages and other packaging materials through a variety of studies.

OxySense 325i: this unique oxygen analyser is the ideal solution for conducting non-invasive or invasive measurements in oil, water or air. The OxySense 325i is particularly ideal for smaller labs, companies considering bringing their oxygen testing requirements in-house for the first time and companies looking for a low-cost solution.

OxyPerm™ System: this system is an add-on to the unique OxySense 5250i solution, and offers accurate and timely oxygen transmission rate (OTR) testing for films, bottles and finished packages.

OxySentry™ System: specifically designed to monitor the oxygen in MAP chambers, this system is an accurate, fast and low-cost method of monitoring and controlling oxygen levels in either continuous or batch flush systems. It is easy to install, easy to operate, and requires virtually no maintenance.

OxySense 6000: this portable oxygen analyser is a full function, fully portable instrument that can be used to make oxygen measurements in the field, as well as in the lab. This versatile oxygen measuring instrument features advanced user-friendly software which enables the user to perform essentially any and all oxygen measurement and monitoring functions, in both gas and liquid.

OxySense accessories: OxySense provides a wide variety of accessories for applications such as permeation testing, leak detection, and special testing requirements.

Oxygen sensing with the OxyDot™

For oxygen sensing within a package, the OxyDot is placed inside a bottle or package prior to filling. The oxygen sensing dot is illuminated with a pulsed blue light from an LED. The blue light is absorbed by the dot and red light is emitted. The red light is detected by a photo-detector and the fluorescence lifetime is measured. Different lifetimes indicate different levels of oxygen within the package.

Oxygen measurement in bottles using non-invasive instruments

OxySense uses non-invasive oxygen measurement technology to determine oxygen permeation in bottles over time. These instruments can be used with an unlimited number of bottles to determine the oxygen permeation in each of them. It does not use nitrogen continuously and the permeation rates measured represent actual conditions for bottles on the shelf. The bottles can be empty or filled with product. They can also be tested with the closure attached.

Instruments for oxygen permeation measurement

To perform oxygen permeation measurements, attach OxyDots to the inside of each test bottle. Bottles with product can then be filled and capped and are now ready for oxygen measurements using the OxySense oxygen analyser 5250i. To test bottles without product, purge the bottle with nitrogen to remove the oxygen. After purging the oxygen concentration in the bottle can be monitored over time.

OxySense is the world’s first truly non-invasive measurement system for finished packages. The system is unique not only for its ability to measure oxygen non-invasively, but also for its ability to measure oxygen in both the headspace and in dissolved liquids.

The OxySense system non-invasively measures oxygen levels in transparent, translucent and semi-transparent packages and has the capability to simultaneously measure the OTR / permeation rate of all films including opaque films.

All OxySense oxygen measuring instruments comply with ASTM International standard F 2418-08, which covers a procedure for determination of the oxygen concentration in the headspace within a sealed package without opening or compromising the integrity of the package.

Key advantages of OxySense oxygen and OTR measurement include:

  • Fast measurements (5 seconds)
  • Accurate (5% of the reading)
  • Reproducibility is better than 1% (0.2%)
  • Can withstand high temperatures (up to 150°C for 1 hour)
  • Does not consume oxygen
  • Independent of pH and salt concentration
  • No interference from other gases

Oxygen measurement for R&D and quality assurance

All OxySense oxygen testing instruments are easy, accurate and low-cost methods for conducting leak testing and shelf-life studies on Modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), oxygen scavenging, closure seals and PET bottles. OxySense models are suitable for both the lab and the processing floor.

Packaging applications for OxySense

Packaging applications for OxySense include oxygen measurement / testing for blister packs, pouches and bottles, and permeation / oxygen ingress testing for closures and films.

OxyDot Oxygen Sensors O2xyDot®

Our technology relies on a non-invasive, light sensitive, oxygen sensor that we call the OxyDot – O2xyDot®. Placed in packages prior to filling, measurements are achieved simply with a fiber-optic reader pen from outside the package.

Permeation Chamber

The OxySense Permeation Chamber, along with the OxySense OTR software package, allows you to use your OxySense instrument to perform flat film OTR studies and still have the instrument available for finished package OTR studies, head space analysis and dissolved oxygen studies.

OxySense Application Kit

This application kit prepares your package for testing.

The Sidewinder Needle

Introducing a breakthrough invasive measurement device.

The Sidewinder Needle allows you to perforate rigid containers, such as cans, bottles, PET packages and flex packs. You can take measurements with the same award-winning OxySense system and technology they use for their non-invasive tests and permeation studies.

It is built from heavy gauge stainless steel. You can use each Sidewinder Needle for hundreds of measurements, even in metal cans or through metal caps.

Accurate, fast, user-friendly and very affordable to own and use (virtually no maintenance and no annual calibration requirements) – it is the ideal addition to your lab’s resources.

Calibration Chamber

The OxySense Calibration Chamber is an accessory to the OxySense equipment line that enables an easy method for recalibrating the OxySense software for a narrow range of oxygen measurement.

New Emphasis on Shelf Life Studies

With the increasing focus on package lightening and the introduction of new barrier and scavenger films, the food packaging industry is realising the ongoing importance of real time shelf life studies to the package design process.
