Australia’s TNA launches new vertical form fill and seal system
Australia-based food processing and packaging solution provider TNA introduced a new vertical form fill and seal (VFFS) system, arctic 3, after acquiring Italian VFFS manufacturer Sabalpack earlier in 2016.
Part of Sabalpack’s range of wash-down arctic VFFS systems, the new TNA arctic 3 can operate in both wet and cold processing environments.
The new system features a stainless steel, corrosion-resistant cubicle, as well as a separate electrical cabinet and an external touchscreen.
Stora Enso to close corrugated packaging plant in Heinola, Finland
Stora Enso was set to shut down its corrugated packaging plant in Heinola, Finland, and transfer the company's manufacturing activities to its plant in Lahti.
The decision comes after the company announced plans in September to consolidate its production at plants located across Finland.

The company's Profile Pouch for Liquids with a Sonically Sealed Spout was developed at its packaging plant in Noida, India.
The pouch is equipped with a tamper locked spout and a 3D holographic stamp to enable easier pouring.
Linpac, Parkside Flexibles develop new designs for Rfresh Evolve trays
UK-based Linpac and its print partner Parkside Flexibles created new designs for its Rfresh Evolve rigid vacuum skin packaging (VSP) trays.
Created to improve their appeal to consumers, the new designs are available in grass, kraft paper and wood or slate looks printed by Parkside.
The natural prints were laminated into polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) tray during a thermoforming process.
American Packaging to build $170m facility in New York, US
Flexible packaging converter American Packaging (APC) was set to build a new manufacturing plant in Monroe County, New York, US, with an investment of around $170m.
Once completed, the 350,000ft² facility will employ 366 jobs by 2021, with 104 construction positions planned to be added during the construction phase.
APC plans to begin the construction of the new facility by early 2017.
Smurfit Kappa UK to buy Saxon Packaging
Smurfit Kappa UK, a subsidiary of paper-based packaging provider Smurfit Kappa Group, agreed to acquire Saxon Packaging for an undisclosed sum.
Headquartered in Lowestoft, Norfolk, UK, Saxon Packaging currently converts board into corrugated boxes and fitments.
With recent investments in new technology machinery, the company mainly serves customers in Suffolk, East Anglia and home counties in the UK.
Berlin Packaging to open new warehouse and assembly facility in Pennsylvania, US
US-based containers and closures provider Berlin Packaging planned to open a new, integrated warehouse and assembly facility at Clinton Commerce Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The new facility will triple the size of Berlin Packaging’s Pittsburgh operations, as well as increase the capacity of the company’s Qorpak and dangerous goods material packaging divisions.
To be spread across an area of around 300,000ft², the new facility will feature warehouse, kitting and assembly and office spaces.
Sealed Air launches new Stealthwrap packaging technology for cartons
US-based packaging firm Sealed Air unveiled its new carton packaging solution, Stealthwrap.
Offering protection for primary package cartons during transition, Stealthwrap removes the need for additional shipping cartons and packing materials.
When used, the patented micro-layer, opaque cartooning solution shrinks and sticks to the dimensions of the product that has been packed in it.
Action-Pak and APDN sign distribution agreement for DNA-based labels and solutions
US-based Action-Pak entered a reselling partnership deal to distribute Applied DNA Sciences’ (APDN) DNA-based products, including tamper-evident labels with beacon technology.
The deal will also include APDN’s proprietary multi-mode reader solution in the future.
Action-Pak, a contract packaging services provider for military and commercial supply chains, will also supply beacon kits to help supply chain participants perform in-field validation of DNA labels.
Netherlands’ PerfoTec trials Flexfresh Liner bags
Netherlands-based PerfoTec and shippers worldwide conducted trials of the company's Flexfresh Liner bags.
During the trials, which lasted for more than three weeks, the shippers transported blueberries packed in punnets from South America to Europe, both with and without the Flexfresh Liner bag.
Loose blueberries were also shipped with or without the Flexfresh Liner solution.
