Coveris has introduced PolyFlex Thermoform, a thermoforming packaging format developed with Signature Flatbreads and Al’Fez for flatbread products.

The packaging is being used for three Al’Fez flatbread varieties sold through retailers in the UK and the EU.

One of the products is Turkish-Style Flame Baked Mini Flatbreads, which uses printed packaging featuring Al’Fez branding and serving-style imagery.

PolyFlex Thermoform uses a nylon-free polyolefin structure.

Its lidding film combines polyethene and polypropylene, while the base web is made from monomaterial polyethene.

The format aims to replace non-recyclable packaging used in thermoformed food applications.

The packaging can currently be recycled through front-of-store soft plastic collection points at major UK retailers.

The format supports the UK’s extended producer responsibility (EPR) requirements and the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

Coveris developed and validated the packaging through its Film and Food Science Labs in Winsford and Gainsborough, UK.

Testing covered barrier properties, a validated 12-week shelf life, and performance on existing packing lines.

The packaging has heat and puncture resistance, as well as optical clarity for product visibility.

Coveris UK flexibles technical director Mark Robinson said: “The launch of PolyFlex Thermoform is a significant advancement in thermoforming packaging and a new solution for the bakery sector for high-barrier applications.

“We have worked collaboratively with Signature Flatbreads to ensure PolyFlex Thermoform delivers across every requirement, from efficient packing through to shelf-life validation and overall functionality. It is rewarding to see the recycle-ready solution now fully launched, aligned with our No Waste strategy”.

Last month, Coveris produced and delivered a mono-material sleeve for Dr Beckmann’s launch in the liquid fabric softener segment in France. The project moved from initial design to market launch within six months.
