Austrian packaging company Coveris has developed and launched a new recyclable thermoforming film packaging solution, called MonoFlex Thermoform.

The solution has been designed to serve as a sustainable alternative to replace traditional non-recyclable materials used for thermoforming packaging in the food industry.

Production of MonoFlex Thermoform is carried out at the company’s facilities in Germany and the UK.

Coveris said that the solution is manufactured using polyethylene or polypropylene material and is fully nylon-free.

The company said that it can also be produced using a single substrate of coextruded or laminated films based on the specific product’s application and print requirements.

MonoFlex Thermoform has been developed with a wide operating window so it can maintain the same packing speeds as its predecessors.

It offers strong puncture resistance and ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer barrier properties that help in keeping the products safe while increasing their shelf life.

The solution is mainly suitable for packaging bakery items, dairy products, and other food products such as meat, fish, and poultry.

Customers can obtain the MonoFlex Thermoform solution in a fully unprinted variant or only printed on the top side of the film.

This top film is offered with conventional and HD flexographic or rotogravure prints such as matt, gloss, and tactile lacquer finishing. This option is mainly suitable for companies and brands seeking for extra shelf appeal of their products.

Coveris CEO Christian Kolarik said: “Manufactured across multiple locations supporting our vision for No Waste, our monomaterial, recyclable MonoFlex Thermoform films are a direct replacement for non-recyclable alternatives currently used.

“The launch of this material enables a significant amount of plastic packaging to be captured through recycling processes, achieving environmental benefits including carbon footprint reduction and the redirection of materials away from landfill.”
