Mayr-Melnhof Packaging (MMP) Austria was awarded three prizes at the international ProCarton / ECMA Award 2014 with the product solution Artelac Splash Dispense claiming wins in both the "Most Innovative" folding carton and the "Pharmaceuticals" categories.

The Artelac Splash Dispense packaging offers an interesting dispenser function with an efficient flat delivery shape. The design, developed specifically for Bausch & Lomb eye drops, allows quick and easy product removal and automatic re-closing of the drawer. The goal was to guarantee the functionality of the high-quality cartonboard material up to the point of removal by means of a sophisticated construction, which has more than been achieved. Requirements of the packaging, in addition to automatic closing of the removal opening, also include protection against UV rays and dust.

MMP demonstrated the adaptability and power of innovation of cartonboard as a packaging material.

The ProCarton / ECMA Award jury said the Artelac Splash Dispenser package was an excellent example of creative solutions made from cartonboard, a material that impresses with its recyclability, sustainability and generally high-level of environmental awareness.

The ProCarton / ECMA "Sustainability Award 2014" was also awarded to MMP Austria. The greatest challenge of the advent calendar packaging for Paul Reber GmbH was to replace the previously used styrofoam insert with an environmentally-friendly material. This challenge was overcome thanks to the specially developed spiral-shaped "Twister" spring solution, made of cartonboard, which balances out height differences in the products in addition to ensuring perfect product protection and handling. Apart from the free positioning of the products, the window punchouts can be individually designed for complete integration into the packaging design without additional expenditure on materials.

According to the jury, this year’s "Sustainability" award particularly recognises the characteristics of total recycling and harmonious packaging design.
