DS Smith and Schneider Electric have unveiled a universal packaging solution designed for electrical switchgear.
The new design was developed for three types of integrated electrical switchgear products.

The switchgear parts are built into the switchgear cabinet as part of the completed final design.
The packaging itself is made from corrugated cardboard and is fully recyclable.
It is intended to advance Schneider Electric’s sustainability goals by cutting material consumption.
Considering the electrical switchgear products are heavy-duty, they can only be packed and moved from the side using an industrial manipulator.
A central aim of the design is to allow the packaging to be securely fastened to the moving parts of these large industrial products.
It is also meant to make the units easier to handle and manoeuvre throughout production, transport, and wider supply chain operations.
The packaging has been created to work smoothly with automated production lines.
DS Smith Hungary cluster director Levente Szabó said: “The intention was to make a solution that is not only robust, but fast and easy to assemble, and both sustainability and recyclability are extremely important factors for our customer.”
An openable side tray forms what the company described as a ‘stable’ base, helping operators handle the products more easily while allowing them to be firmly fixed in place.
The design also uses the same corrugated cardboard sheet elements to secure the parts, which are integrated into a separate endcap.
A polyethylene bag is included to shield the product’s greased elements from dust.
Metal connectors are protected by a simply folded corrugated cardboard insert.
Each side element is bonded together using several layers of corrugated cardboard.
The multi-layered endcaps are likewise made from fibre-based corrugated cardboard materials.
Earlier this month, DS Smith developed a transport box for Austria-based BWT [Best Water Technology] to protect the latter’s MACH Water Filters during transit.
